As the person behind developing the ideal cookie and its unique pineapple shape, Keith Sung knew how the dough felt, how it tasted, which meant using only butter, cane sugar, fruit purees, chocolate - no shortcuts, even though it could have saved the company money. Using premium ingredients in its cookie recipes has been the hallmark of Honolulu Cookie Company - and it remains so today, the family said. ![]() Janet is more attuned to the management side. ![]() Keith focuses on the brand development side of things with his creative background. His parents play an active role in the business. He says that he spent his time as general manager working on three-, five- and 10-year visions for the company. “I think we ran the company for so long where everybody knew the culture, felt the culture, but nobody knew how to define it.” “One of the big things I wanted to drive was the mission and vision of the company just putting it into words, defining it,” he said. It’s a different story in today’s highly digitized world - that’s where Ryan came in to build upon the foundation created by his parents. Advertising was by word-of-mouth, based on customers’ experiences. Like many mom-and-pop businesses, a hands-on approach ensured quality products and good service while maintaining strong relationships with customers.
